Door County Restaurant Picks

This list is by no means complete, just some good places to dine we found during a short visit. If you found other good places to eat in Door County, please add them to the comments section at the end of this article.

Harbor Fish Grill
Our favorite restaurant in the area, this restaurant, located a bit out of the way at the tip of Door County’s peninsula in Bailey’s Harbor, offers spectacular harbor views, and first class cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Local chef Kara Walker incorporates local ingredients when possible. Her light hand let’s the quality of the ingredients shine through just the right amount of seasonings. Of course with a name like the Harbor Fish Grill, you’ll find lots of creative fresh seafood choices – if their on the menu when you visit, don’t miss the Halibut Cheeks – a delicate fish dish that tastes like a cross between the richness of lobster with the delicateness of white fish. There are also a variety of great steaks and meat dishes along with a vegetarian entrée or two.

The eclectic menu offers lots of choices no matter what kind of mood you’re in and the extensive wine list will have to something to match anything you choose. An especially nice touch here are the fresh vegetables that accompany dinners – too often side dishes are a throw-away item that don’t get enough attention. At the Harbor Fish Grill, the side dishes really shine. Be prepared to take home a doggie bag – the portions are huge, especially for an upscale restaurant.

The Harbor Fish Grill also offers traditional New England style lobster boils on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evenings.

Al Johnson's Swedish restaurant, Door County, WIAl Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik
No your eyes are not deceiving you – those are actual goats grazing on the sod roof of this traditional Swedish restaurant in Sister Bay. As happy as the goats may be at their tasty, if somewhat unusually located, dinner, theirs can’t compare to happiness diners inside feel when served a traditional breakfast of paper thin Swedish pancakes with traditional tangy lingonberry preserves and savory sausage (pictured at the top of this post served by one of Al Johnson's traditionally clad waitresses). What a breakfast!

Aside from breakfast, diners will find an array of coffee shop type fare at this charming casual eatery. To stay with the theme, try the Swedish meatballs or Norwegian salmon.

While half of the thatch roof covered building is taken up with the restaurant, the other half houses an extraordinary Scandinavian gift shop. From Swedish decorative pieces, to clogs, clothing, music, specialty food items, toys, and souvenirs, you’ll find a huge assortment of Scandinavian produced goods here.

While the surreal sight of goats on the roof of Al Johnson’s draws lots of attention from tourists, the quality of the food and merchandise here definitely merits a stop inside.

Village Café

This casual coffee shop features homemade soups, salads and sandwiches, along with terrific hearty breakfasts served all day long. The restaurant space does double duty as a gift shop and art gallery and guests dine surrounded by the unique whimsical wares, and colorful, constantly evolving art lined walls.
