A vintage silver tree or its modern cousin, the holographic foil tree is a good backdrop as these trees really show off the monochrome design.  You could, of course, also use the principles on a traditional natural green tree as well.

You can acocomplish this design quite inexpensively by going to the dollar store and buying a bunch of ornament in a color palette.  That's what we did with the blue tree in the these photo -- decorations for the entire tree cost less than $20.00 (we bought the tree itself for a mere $7.00 the previous year at an after Christmas sale).  We used some plastic snowflake ornaments (also bought at the dollar store) to scatter around the treeskirt to carry out the theme.  To make a fluffy big bow, like the blue tree topper, see the Related projects section below for instructions.

One thing I really like about this idea is that it gives you the choice to match your ornaments; or it lets you use variety in your ornaments, giving the tree interest for anyone who wants to admire it up close.  (See closeup photos below).  As long as you stay in the same color family, it still looks great.

We even carried the monochrome theme to the table drape we used for our 4 foot tall tree.  In the photo below we centered the tree on a small shelf, then used a bright red holiday tablecloth to cover the book filled shelves below.  Some inexpensive silver beads draped over the shelf front ties it all together.
