When I first looked through the pages of this book I thought, this is not for me - despite my interest in making pop-up cards and books! But when I looked a little further, I realized I couldn't have been more wrong - this book was EXACTLY what I was looking for. It's deceiving because when you merely flip through the pages, there are no slick photos of beautifully designed cards. It turns out that's a good thing. Author Mark Hiner rather than merely showing you some cool card designs you can make, teaches the principles that will allow you to make a lifetime of impressive pop-up cards of all kinds. Teach a man to fish… When you flip through a pop-up book or look at an elaborate card, it may seem quite complex. You may even thin it would be too much trouble to try to make yourself. It isn't until you actually try to make the mechanism that causes the pop-up that you realize just how simple it can be. And that's exactly what Hiner has you do. The book is a series of ten models that you cut out of the book and actually put together (the only materials you need are a craft knife and some glue). The models do not have fancy designs or printing on them - they are not actually meant to be used as cards. Instead building the models along with holding them in your hands and looking at them from all angles shows you the world of possibilities that you can use them for - a world only limited by your imagination. The author shows a few sketches of possible cards you can make with each technique/mechanism, but these are only the tip of the iceberg. Once you understand how the various pop-up mechanisms work, you'll think of countless ways to use them on your own of Greeting Card, Book Making, Scrapbooking and Altered Book projects. The finished pop-up models conveniently store right back in the book for easy access later. While the book is written for adults, the craft is simple enough for kids old enough to handle craft knives, and younger if you do the cutting for them. Pop-up techniques covered: Multiple Layers; Floating Layers; V-Folds; Magic Boxes; Moving Arms; Rotation Discs; Sliding Motion; Pull-Up Planes; Pivoting Motion; Dissolving Scenes. |
