The title of this book is somewhat misleading. At first glance you might think it is a book about baking pies. To be sure, there are several pie recipes in there, but it is so much more. Mindy Marin has collected recipes from people's grandmothers. There are recipes for all kinds of favoritie foods from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds. Included are brief stories about the grandmothers themselves. You'll find favorite family recipes for breakfasts, breads, main dishes, vegetables, pickles, sauces, relishes and jellies, pies, cakes, cookies and other desserts. My own grandmother died before I was old enough to really get into cooking. I still remember some of her terrific dishes though. Maybe this book isn't quite the same thing, but it's close. I received my copy as a gift and this does make a wonderful, personal and sentimental gift. I highly recommend it. |
