We used a variety of paper crafting tools and techniques to make this elegant card, including vellum paper and ink embossing. Don't worry if you're new to any of the techniques, there are links to instructional tutorials in the Ralted Projects and Features sections below. When I designed this card, I didn't stop, I also came up with four other card designs that use the same rubber stamped image. Click here for details and directions for the other cards. |
| Supplies: |
a large white card blank (ours was 5 1/2 X 9 3/4)
oval shape cutting tool (we used Fiskars
Shape Cutter tool) |
| Instructions: |
You will also need to use a paper punch to punch a bunch of blue flower/sun cut outs from blue scrap paper. 1.![]() Step 1. To prepare the card blank, cut a large oval (slightly bigger than the cut out stamped dreidels) in the card stock. Cut the oval centered widthwise, but slightly higher than center lengthwise. Use any tool you like, we used the Fiskar's Shape Cutter tool to do the job 2. The ornate dreidel stamp we used for these projects is made by Ruth's Jewish Rubber Stamps. It worked especially well for this design as it is a head on few, so we can stamp two and glue them together. 3. Step 3. To prepare the hanging dreidel card element, apply glue to the back side of one of the embossed, cut out paper dreidels. Place a short length of blue and equal length of white embroidery floss along the center of the paper dreidel, starting at the top and running the floss about halfway down the length of the dreidel. Sandwich the floss between the two paper elements by adhering the second paper dreidel on top of the first. Step 4. Use a gel pen in a matching blue to clean up any rough edges of the dreidel. 5. Step 5. Place a piece of scrap paper between the cover and inside of the card. Use a Happy Hanukah rubber stamp and clear or resist ink to randomly stamp the words all over the front of the card. Step 6. Pick up some blue chalk on a small cotton ball. Rub the chalked cotton over the clear stamped images and the words will "magically appear." Click here for more details on using this resist ink chalking technique. 7. Step 7. Photo 7 shows the front of the card after the resist chalking is finished. Step 8. Apply a small amount of adhesive to one of the flower/sun punch outs (we used a glue stick). Use the punched piece to adhere the embroidery floss and hanging dreidel to the front of the card as shown in Photo 8. 9. Step 9. Continue placing the flower/sun punches around the border of the oval cutout, overlapping them slightly, until the entire oval is outlined. Step 10 is optional. We used colored pencils to lightly color a random blue tint on the inside of the card, as it will show through the cut out oval window. |
