Here's a technique that works like magic. You first stamp an image with a clear or watermark ink pad, such as the Versa Mark pad, then brush over the stamped area with colored chalk - the image magically appears! Here's how to do it:

1. versa mark inks, watermark rubber stamping

1. Stamp an image with a clear or resist ink such as the Versa-Mark pad. In the photo above we are using a clear stamp on an acrylic mount, but you can use any rubber stamp.

2. rubber stamping techniques, chalks

2. Used alone, resist ink pads produce a soft water mark type image like in the photo above. This is a nice effect in and of itself, if you want a lightly colored background image or mat.

3. rubber stamping techniques, chalks

3. Take some colored chalk on a cotton ball and brush it over the stamped area (hint, you may want to get some of the chalk off the cotton ball on a piece of scrap paper before going to your project piece). The image will magically appear. You control how dark or light the image appear by brushing on more chalks, or using a clean cotton ball to remove chalk.

4. rubber stamping techniques, chalks

4. Don't worry about getting chalk on other parts of your paper. Chalk is very forgiving. All you need is a white rubber artist's eraser to easily get rid of any unwanted chalk.
