Eyelets, which place a reinforced metal hole in your paper, are a great decorative and functional accessory for paper crafting. They can hold two or more layers of paper together while adding a distinctive accent to the page. They can be used to string or hang other elements through. You can also use eyelets to add movement to your greeting cards or scrapbook pages, as the paper will swivel around the eyelet.

In order to use eyelets, you will need an eyelet setter tool like the one in the photo at right. Tools like this one come with a variety of interchangeable tips to accommodate different size eyelets. What it does is spread the metal on the back side of the eyelet so it stays anchored to the paper.

It may seem complicated, but setting eyelets is really very simple, as the instructions below show.

Step 1. Punch a small hole in your paper (we used an awl in the photo above but you can also use a tiny paper punch or other tool. Step 2. Place the eyelet through the hole and turn the paper over.

Step 3. Place the eyelet setter tool over the back of the eyelet and gently hammer it. This will spread out the metal on the back side and set the eyelet (photo 4).

Step 5. Turn over to see eyelet. That's all there is to it, your eyelet is set!
