golf in big bearBIG BEAR LAKE, CALIFORNIA, USA - If you've never tried alpine golfing before, you're in for a surprise. Because the air is thinner there's less drag on the ball and it tends to travel further. A good place to put this to the test is the Bear Mountain Golf Course adjacent to the Moonridge Animal Park and Bear Mountain Ski and Snowboard Resort.

Open from May through October, nine holes of mountain meadows, streams and challenging fairways await on this par 35, links style course that sits at 7400 feet above sea level. Plan on spending about 2 hours to complete the course.

The white fencing that still remains in the middle of the course reminds locals that it was built on a former horse meadow. The surrounding mountain slopes and pine forests remind everyone they're in an alpine wonderland. According to the course manager, at night the coyote's come out to play. "They're all over the place at night, it's like their personal park. Once in a while one wanders out here during the day, but they don't bother anybody."

While you can often walk in and tee off during the week, a reserved tee time is a must on weekends -- it's suggested you call at least a week in advance. In addition to playing 9 holes, you can brush up your skills at the on site driving range and practice putting green and sand trap.

The Bear Mountain Golf Course is owned and operated by the same folks who run Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Ski and Snowboard Resorts. All are notably well organized and run - staff are always knowledgeable and helpful and facilities always well maintained, ensuring a fun stress free experience for guests. Even small detail are thought of, for instance a practice cage at the start of course will amuse guests should there ever be a backup at the first tee.
